Introduction

Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Law (FHSSL) is one of the four functioning faculties of Pokhara University. The FHSSL is committed to advancing teaching, learning, research, and innovation in the fields of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Legal Studies. Its mission emphasizes interdisciplinary studies at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels, with degree programmes in Development Studies, Population and Gender Studies, Entrepreneurship Studies, English Communication, English Literature, and Legal Education. Cumulatively, the Faculty is dedicated to advancing the scope of sustainable development through teaching and mentoring students across diverse areas of social engineering. The faculty contributes to Pokhara University’s goal of becoming a Centre of Excellence. The programmes of the faculty are offered in two constituent colleges – The School of Development and Social Engineering (SDSE) at the Academic Complex, Pokhara University, Pokhara, and Shramik Shanti Campus (SSC), located at Chyasal, Lalitpur in addition to three affiliated colleges.

Vision

The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law aspires to be a regional leader in contemporary academia in the fields of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Legal Education, and to contribute to sustainable development by integrating multidisciplinary knowledge in the domain of social engineering, thereby extending its scope along both vertical and horizontal dimensions.

Mission

The mission of the Faculty is to furnish students, researchers, and aspirants to knowledge with an avenue for the advancement, promotion, and propagation of geo-environmental, techno-economic, politico-institutional, and socio-cultural theories and practices through teaching-learning and mentoring; research, study and innovation; scholarly communication and high-quality publications; and community engagement and intellectual leadership services.

Goal

The Faculty aims to cultivate a professional, academic, and entrepreneurial community equipped with scientific knowledge, intellectual insight, technical know-how, and practical skill (KITS), thereby fostering independent thinking, critical analysis, and self-governed, ethical professionals grounded in academic comprehensiveness across multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary studies.

Objectives

The teaching-learning and research objectives of the Faculty are to: provide learning opportunities in contemporary and frontier fields of social sciences, liberal arts, and legal studies; enhance educational quality and learning infrastructure; identify and deliver market-relevant applied courses and programmes grounded in disciplinary fundamentals; and produce internationally competitive human resources and self-employed social entrepreneurs equipped with the skills and aptitude to address international professional, academic and entrepreneurial challenges creatively.

The faculty further aims to expand and strengthen research activities across all schools/colleges, programmes and units; to enhance the research capacity of faculty members, research scientists, and students; and to advance science communication through presentations, policy-dialogues, and scientific publications – all ultimately integrated into teaching and mentoring and into preparing students for independent research.

Training and continuing education constitute a further objective, designed to refresh and upgrade the skills of the faculty’s academic and administrative staff. Human resources thus refreshed and reinforced are equipped to meet the operational challenges and to exercise sustained leadership in advancing the services and knowledge directed towards resolution of societal problems.

As part of its outreach, community and public service mandate, the faculty is committed to orienting its activities and outputs towards community welfare. It focuses on research projects that contribute to community betterment and support local government and communities in translating the research findings into practical applications.

The faculty provides consultancy services drawing upon the expertise available within it. These services range from technical, professional, and policy advisory services to research, evaluation, and programme design. The services are offered beyond border, insofar as the available expertise meets the requirements, working together with different tiers of government, development agencies, bilateral and multilateral organizations, and NGOs/INGOs in Nepal and beyond.
