Master of Science in Hydropower Engineering

Hydropower developments around the world have been growing and greening the world’s electricity supplies by generating clean, reliable and cost-effective power from rivers. Renewable hydropower will remain one of the major source of electricity production in future as well. Nepal is rich in water resources. If this natural resource is properly harnessed, it can generate enormous hydropower. Hydropower can play important role in overall development of Nepal because of its huge potential. Nepal is said to have more than 40,000 megawatts of economically viable hydropower potential. Government of Nepal has increased its efforts to generate hydropower for having easy access to modern, high-quality hydropower services and become an energy exporting country. Additionally, it will enable Nepal to balance its supply deficit in the dry season with the revenues made through exports during the wet season, when river flows are high. M.Sc. Hydropower Engineering program at Pokhara University is aimed to produce highly skilled technical human resources with full capacity to plan and design hydropower projects, with due appreciation and consideration of hydrological, sedimentological, geotechnical, socio-environmental, and climate change issues for sustainable development. The program features both the theoretical and practical aspects of specifying, designing, implementing and managing small and large-scale hydropower projects. The M.Sc. in Hydropower Engineering program will be helpful to address the need for Master level professionals with a comprehensive and well-grounded knowledge in the field of hydropower. Graduates of this program are expected to work in interdisciplinary teams, and conduct independent research. They will be competent persons for all aspects of hydropower and provide necessary expertise for inspection or maintenance work, development and application tasks.
