Natural and man-made (technological) disasters like earthquake, droughts, floods, landslide, avalanche, disease outbreaks are common worldwide. Recent major earthquakes, floods and other natural phenomena have resulted in huge losses in terms of human life and property destruction. Additionally, human-made disasters have afflicted humanity in modern times. It is important to understand the nature of these global risks to be able to develop strategies to prepare for these events and plan effective responses in terms of disaster management and the associated human health impacts.This conference will provide a forum for the exchange of information between academics and practitioners on various disasters, their implications on public health, mitigation measures and latest developments.
The conference will take place during May 1-3, 2019 at Pokhara, Nepal. The conference will consist of a mixture of both oral and poster presentation sessions. First two days (May 1-2, 2019) will have a series of plenary and parallel sessions on various theme in the field of disaster management and public health issues. Additionally, half-day field excursion will be organized on first day of the conference. Contributions to the conference will be selected according to their relevance to the topics of the event. More information regarding the program will be made available separately. Last day (3rd May, 2019) will be largely focused on strategic meetings among the partner country representatives for advancing the SPHERA project activities.
About Pokhara: It is second largest city of Nepal. It is the capital of the Gandaki Province and the headquarter of the Kaski district. It is located 200 kilometres west of the capital city. It is a tourist hub and attracts people from all over the world to see beautiful lakes, waterfalls, caves, hills, snow-fed mountains, temples and museums located inside and around the city.
Its location is characterised by humid subtropical climate. However, the altitude keeps the temperature moderate. In summer, the average temperature is 25 to 35 °C. Winter is around -2 to 15 °C. Most of the precipitation occurs during the monsoon season (July-September). There are many places to stay in Pokhara. The hotel offers many options to choose from budget hotels to deluxe ones. Pokhara has a domestic airport. Domestic flights connect Pokhara with Kathmandu for air travellers. Pokhara is connected by road with many cities including Kathmandu City.
