School of Development and Social Engineering

Introduction

The School of Development and Social Engineering (SDSE) which was established to run the constituent programmes of Pokhara University under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is established with a vision to the “Development Leadership for the Future”. It has the mission to develop itself as the Centre of Excellence in development and social areas of higher education and aims to teach, learn and research the philosophy, theories and practices of development and society as well as to provide training on development and societal transformation.

The School aims to produce junior, mid- and expert level human resources that are capable to provide leadership to the contemporary development and enabling the society and the nation to achieve the desired end of sustainable development and social justice.

School Perspectives

Both society and development take the path of evolution and their studies and stock of knowledge take scientific approach, i.e. achieving intellectual insights, technical know-how and practical skills needed for the dynamic structure, process and behaviour of development and society through understanding, observation and experiment. Thus the study of development and society has brought the immense stock of knowledge from economics, geography, natural and environmental sciences, sociology and anthropology, law, management, and political science into contemporary focus on development and social engineering, to address the future need of the professional, academic and entrepreneurial human resources for development and societal transformation.

Objectives

The overall objective of the School programmes is to culminate in the knowledge and skills in the interdisciplinary study areas of development and society. Specifically the School aims:

  1. to enable students and researchers to understand the philosophy, theories and concepts of development and society;
  2. to enable students and trainees to learn the skills and to practice the methods and techniques of policy formulation, planning and implementation for the sustainable development and societal transfiguration;
  3. to train students, researchers and trainees to fulfill the demand of professionals human resources required for local, sub-national, national and international development;
  4. to train students, researchers and trainees to fulfill the demand of academic human resources required for higher education, research and training;
  5. to develop among students, researchers and trainees effective leadership qualities for managing development and societal transfiguration;
  6. to educate graduates, researchers and trainees to undertake leadership roles at all functional levels of development, that is local, sub-national (sub-regional and regional), national and international as well as formal levels of development colloquially known as village/municipality, sub-district, district, regional/provincial/ state, central/national and global/international; and
  7. to develop a Centre of Excellence and academia for development and society.

Welcome to the School of Development and Social Engineering at Pokhara University. At a point of time when many developing countries are facing various challenges, this School seeks to offer professional and practical leadership in providing cutting-edge academic programs in development studies.

We have designed a series of academic programs which include Bachelor of Development Studies (BDEVS), Bachelor of English Communication Studies (BECS), Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Development (BED), Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Laws (B.A.LL.B.), Master in Population, Gender and Development (MPGD), and Master of Development Studies (MDEVS).

From the very beginning, this school has been providing challenging and innovative teaching in the field of development studies, a rapidly growing area of study concerned with the people, economy, and society and to promote high-quality research to address the problems of developing countries like Nepal. We provide practical knowledge on existing theories, policies, planning, or implementing social concepts.

The graduates of this program have a wide horizon of choices from respected career opportunities at national and international development organizations to unlimited opportunities to apply for higher studies in the different areas of development studies. Students are expected to go on to make contributions in a range of diversified fields for community development.

Admission Eligibility

Anyone who has completed 10+2 or intermediate level or its equivalent in any discipline from a recognized HS Board/College is eligible for applying to BDEVS and BECS. Applicants are selected from a merit list of entrance examination conducted by the School of Development and Social Engineering. Applicants who have completed Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in any discipline from a recognized university are eligible for applying to MPGD and MDEVS. Applicants are selected from a merit list of entrance examination conducted by the SDSE.

 

Admission Procedures

A notice inviting applications for admission is publicly announced in newspapers and PU Website (www.pu.edu.np). Eligible applicants have to attend entrance test (written exam followed by an interview) as applicable to qualify for admission. Scholarship 20% scholarship quota is available for BDEVS/ BECS/MPGD/ MDEVS students. For this purpose, a separate application is required as per PU Scholarship Procedure and a separate procedure of entrance test is applied to select the students.
